Paul Cluver Wines: Cool Climate Class Act

Pioneers of the Elgin appellation, the Cluver family’s focus is on producing world-class wines that reflect the uniqueness of the cool-climate terroir.

By Pick n Pay Wine Club

Discover Paul Cluver Wines amongst the rolling hills and mountain slopes of the Elgin Valley, less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Leave your worries behind as you drive through the gates and escape into the tranquilly of open spaces and picturesque scenery.

“Producing world class wines requires a team effort, far greater than just the Clüver family. As a family business, our goal is to guide the team and ensure that we adhere to the values which helped us to be successful for over a century.”

Wines That Take Their Time

Elgin is South Africa’s coolest wine growing region, where altitude, slope, prevailing winds, diurnal temperature variations and sunlight interception are the hallmarks of its terroir. For winemakers, these conditions offer a unique benefit - an extended ripening period on the vine. As they slowly ripen, grapes accumulate more aromas and flavours, and retain higher acidity, which creates naturally balanced wines with layered complexity.

Farming for the Future

Committed to making meaningful differences, the Cluver family pursues sustainable agriculture and has received international recognition for its farming practices. These awards include the Drinks Business Green Awards Lifetime Achievement, the Nedbank Green Award for Best Environmental Farming Practices and the Nedbank Leader in Water Conservation. The estate is also a WWF South Africa Conservation Champion, with 60% of its land set aside for conservation into perpetuity.

Hit the Trails

Once you’ve seen the terroir, get out and explore it on your mountain bike - Paul Cluver Wines is a sought-after destination for world-class mountain biking. From undulating jeep track to a thrilling selection of technical single track, riders can completely customise their experience. The routes include spectacular fynbos, the estate’s famous wooden bridges and rolling switchbacks, all set within the Kogelberg Biosphere - a UNESCO world heritage site.

Tastings With a View

Experience their cool-climate wines on the expansive wooden deck of the Paul Cluver Wines Tasting Room, overlooking the farm’s fruit orchards. Seated in the dappled shade, you’ll be introduced to the estate’s range of single varietal, multi-awarded wines - namely the Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Recent accolades won during 2020 include a Platinum at the international Decanter Awards, as well as the best Pinot Noir in South Africa at the National Wine Challenge and a Top 10 ranking in the national Sauvignon Blanc Report. They’ll also be opening a brand new restaurant for the summer season, which promises to be a feast for the senses as well as the soul.
