Spicy Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

A much-loved classic with some added zing!

  • Serves 4



  1. To make sauce, heat oil in a pot and sauté onion for 3-5 minutes until golden.
  2. Add garlic and fry for a minute. Stir in tomato paste and ground spices and fry for a minute.
  3. Add canned tomatoes, sugar and seasoning and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Heat olive oil in a pan and fry onions for meatballs for about 3-5 minutes until soft.
  5. Add garlic and spices and cook until fragrant. Set aside to cool slightly, keeping pan aside for frying meatballs.
  6. Combine onion mixture with remaining meatball ingredients. Season.
  7. Roll about 2 tbsp (30ml) each of meatball mixture into balls and chill for 20 minutes.
  8. Fry meatballs in a little oil for 3-5 minutes until browned. Tip tomato sauce into pan and simmer for 2-3 minutes with meatballs.
  9. Serve meatballs in sauce with spaghetti on the side.
