Ingredients

Syrup

  • 3 cups (750ml) cold water

  • 1 cup (250ml) sugar

  • Juice of 1 lemon

  • 1 packet (250g) soft dried fruit mix

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 3 cloves

Kluitjies

  • 1 cup (250ml) self-raising flour

  • 2 large eggs, beaten

  • ½ tsp (3ml) salt

  • 1 Tbsp (15ml) butter, melted

  • 1 tsp (5ml) ground cinnamon

Method

  1. Heat water, sugar and lemon juice in a saucepan, stirring until sugar dissolves.

  2. Add fruit, cinnamon stick and cloves and simmer gently for 30 minutes or until fruit has plumped up.

  3. Remove fruit and set aside; reserve syrup for kluitjies. Remove spices and discard.

Kluitjies

  1. Mix kluitjie ingredients together to form a smooth batter.

  2. Heat reserved syrup.

  3. Drop teaspoonfuls of batter into hot syrup in batches.

  4. Simmer for about 4 minutes, or until kluitjies have doubled in size. Serve dried fruit and kluitjies drizzled with syrup.
