3 cups (750ml) cold water
1 cup (250ml) sugar
Juice of 1 lemon
1 packet (250g) soft dried fruit mix
1 cinnamon stick
1 cup (250ml) self-raising flour
2 large eggs, beaten
½ tsp (3ml) salt
1 Tbsp (15ml) butter, melted
1 tsp (5ml) ground cinnamon
Heat water, sugar and lemon juice in a saucepan, stirring until sugar dissolves.
Add fruit, cinnamon stick and cloves and simmer gently for 30 minutes or until fruit has plumped up.
Remove fruit and set aside; reserve syrup for kluitjies. Remove spices and discard.
Mix kluitjie ingredients together to form a smooth batter.
Heat reserved syrup.
Drop teaspoonfuls of batter into hot syrup in batches.
Simmer for about 4 minutes, or until kluitjies have doubled in size. Serve dried fruit and kluitjies drizzled with syrup.
