How It All Began

From three small stores whose shelves Raymond and Wendy Ackerman kept stocked themselves, to a sprawling national conglomerate with 1500 stores, the story of Pick n Pay is one that is told in milestones.

in stores for the first time.

in everything that Pick n Pay does.

We venture into franchising, with the first 6 Pick n Pay Family stores. A post-election strike leads to a historic agreement being struck between Pick n Pay and SACCAWU.

Pick n Pay Financial Services
is launched.

1999

Formation of the

Ackerman Family Council,

with an initial investment of R30 million into community upliftment. Fresh FM starts broadcasting.

The VUSELELA

(Rebirth)
programme is born, rethinking our position in order to lead retail into the 21st century.

The Hypermarket arm of the business is consolidated into it’s own separate division, taking it’s cue from France’s Carrefour chain - the model Ackerman used when building the first Hypermarket.
